Jay Lafontaine Sensei started training in martial arts when he was young with his father Jack Lafontaine, who had also started in karate when he was very young. Not having a lot of money growing up, Jack Lafontaine Sensei would teach some classes in exchange for membership to various dojos for himself and his three sons. Jay graded for his Shodan (black belt) in Meibukan Gojo Ryu karate in 1997. He has also trained in Wrestling, Taekwondo, Jujutsu, and Kenpo karate.
Jay began training in Yoshinkan Aikido in 2015 when it was time to decide which martial art he wanted his son to learn. He happened to come across an advertisement for Aikido in the local newspaper. He decided to enroll his son with Joe Simon Sensei at the Tomasu Dojo and joined himself shortly after in order to understand what his son was trying to learn in hopes to better help him with his training.
Jay received his Shodan (Black belt) and instructors license from Nic Mills Shihan at the Senkodan Dojo in Mississauga in June 2019, and is registered with the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo in Japan.
Sadly, due to the pandemic the Tomasu Dojo has temporarily closed, which forced Jay to open Naiseikan Dojo in order to continue his training.
Jay Lafontaine Sensei continues to train regularly with the Sendokan Dojo and attends as many seminars as possible to continue to learn and grow in the art.
